Český Krumlov: the best things worth seeing and experiencing

01/03/2026

Český Krumlov is a small town with beautiful monuments that you can explore, for example, from a raft. That is something you will not experience just anywhere.

Český Krumlov Castle and the Cloak Bridge

Český Krumlov Castle is the second-largest castle complex in the Czech Republic, and its uniqueness lies primarily in its scale and setting within the landscape. A key feature is the Cloak Bridge, which connects the upper part of the castle with the castle gardens and offers one of the best views of the historic center and the meandering Vltava River.

It is not necessary to take interior tours to understand the town. Simply walking through the grounds, courtyards, and bridges provides a much stronger sense of context than the individual halls.

The Castle Garden and Revolving Auditorium

The Castle Garden is one of the largest Baroque gardens in the Czech Republic and is notable not only for its layout but also for being off the beaten path. The garden's centerpiece is the revolving auditorium, a unique structure on a European scale.

Even without attending a performance, it's worth taking a stroll through the garden—it offers a quieter space and views of the rear of the castle that aren't visible from the city.

The Historic Center from a Different Perspective

The viewpoint near the Seminary Garden, the area around St. Vitus Church, and the path along the river toward the castle gardens are definitely worth a visit.

From here, you can best see the layout of the town, nestled between a bend in the Vltava River and the castle complex.

Graphite Mine

The Český Krumlov Graphite Mine offers a lesser-known but very unique experience. The tour includes protective suits and helmets, a ride on a mine train, and a descent into the underground.

This is not a "family attraction," but a realistic look into graphite mining, which was of fundamental importance to the region. For visitors looking for something other than the historic center, it offers a striking contrast.

Rafts and Canoes

Paddling down the Vltava River right through the historic center is one of the most authentic experiences in Český Krumlov. It's not about the adrenaline rush, but about the unique view of the town from the river's surface. Try the route: Český Krumlov – Zlatá Koruna.
